The NBA Board of Governors discussed the option at its annual summer meeting and Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver said there was unanimous support for endorsing advertisement on jerseys. The guidelines are set to be approved in September, giving the owners the green light to put ads on jerseys in the 2013-2014 season.
It is estimated that this move will generate $100 million dollars in revenues per season. The specs of the patches would be 2.5-inches by 2.5-inches, would feature names of the companies and will be placed on the left shoulder of the jersey, where the NBA logo is currently located.
Even though the WNBA already have sponsorship patches on their jerseys, the NBA would be the first of the four major professional leagues in America to take that leap and change the way we look at sports. I won’t be long before the other pro leagues jump on board; who’s going to turn down a simple way to make big money? THis move might rub some fans the wrong way at first, but they will get used to it…especially if this move will keep the ticket prices down.
