Rudy Gay/James Harden trades will not be the last ones.

Basketball and money

Basketball fans need to get ready for some more “shocking trades” coming up before the NBA’s trading deadline on February 21st because teams will have to make moves to get under the salary cap or get hit hard in the pockets with luxury taxes.

The collective bargaining agreement that was negotiated after last year’s lockout makes the penalties for going over the salary cap far more penalizing.  It doesn’t matter if you’re a small market team or a team with highly lucrative television contracts, NBA teams have to be more responsible with their spending under the new deal that will start next season; teams that are “repeat offenders” will be taxed at rates that will multiply with each consecutive year they go over the cap.  This means there might be the end of the Big Three concept.
