Damian Lillard to win the 2013 NBA Rookie of the Year

Congrats to Damian Lillard for winning the NBA 2013 Rookie of the Year.

Lillard was drafted as the sixth pick in the 2012 NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers, making him the highest selected player coming out of  Weber State University.

He came in the league BLAZING from day one!  On October 31, 2012, in his NBA debut against the Los Angeles Lakers, Lillard recorded 23 points and 11 assists, joining Oscar Robertson and Isiah Thomas as the only players in NBA history with at least 20 points and 10 assists in their NBA debuts.

On November 3, 2012, Lillard joined Oscar Robertson in recording 20 or more points and more than seven assists in his first three rookie season games. Lillard had a lock on the Western Conference’s Rookie of the Month award by sweeping it for the whole 2012-2013 season (November-April).  Damian won the Taco Bell Skills Challenge at All-Star Weekend in Houston, it was his first appearance.

Damian LillardWhen the dust had settled for the season, Lillard averaged 19 points, 6.5 assists and 3.1 rebounds.  He shot 42.9% from the field and 36.38% from three-point range.

Damian Lillard is also durable   He played in ALL 82 GAMES, averaging 38.6 minutes a game – leading the league in minutes for the season.  Were there really any questions why he wouldn’t win the ROY?

Win it’s official, Lillard will be the fourth Portland Trailblazer player to win this award; the others are Geoff Petrie (1971), Sidney Wicks (1972) and Brandon Roy (2006).
