I have to admit that there are a handful of people who can actually talk about and critique the mess that the recent Heisman trophy winner Johnny Manziel has put himself in, and one of them is another Heisman trophy recipient.
Former NFL running back Ricky Williams (officially retiring from the NFL in 2011) agreed in July to be the running back coach at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas and was asked about Manziel at his introductory press conference. Williams was straightforward and didn’t hold anything back when talking about the Texas A&M QB. Williams also took a shot at the media for adding on to the problems and I think they were fair and just.
“You know once you win the Heisman Trophy, there’s going to be more attention on you, You are probably not going to be able to get away with all the stuff you got away with before. To the media I would say, if the media did their research on who this kid was, nobody would be surprised.”
Another Heisman trophy winner, Desmond Howard, the 1991 winner, was somewhat sympathetic to the fact that Manziel, according to NCAA rules, can’t be compensated for his signature. Ricky Williams won the 64th Heisman Trophy in 1998 when he was the star running back for the University of Texas.
Tell me what you think about Ricky Williams statement and what you think about the whole Johnny Manziel situation.
