The Real Odd Couple (of the NBA)

Jackson and Buss

Phil Jackson and President of the Los Angeles Lakers Jeanie Buss have been dating since December 1999; the couple have Playa del Rey, Los Angeles and they are now engaged.  Now that Phil Jackson officially became the President of Basketball Operations for the New York Knicks, did anybody realize that there might be a little “conflict of interest” between the couple and the two NBA organizations?

Evidently somebody did, the NBA has stepped in with their lawyers.

ESPN’s Darren Rovell and Shelburne posted the details.

An NBA official has acknowledged that the league has put parameters in place to make sure that the high-profile relationship between Jeanie Buss and Phil Jackson doesn’t create any issues.

“The Knicks’ hiring of Phil Jackson is subject to the league’s conflict of interest rules,” NBA spokesman Mike Bass told “To avoid even the appearance of a conflict, we have addressed the issue with the Knicks and Lakers to ensure that the relationship between Jeanie Buss and Phil Jackson will not affect how the teams operate.”

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver broached the topic with Buss at a dinner, she said in an interview on Time Warner SportsNet Wednesday..  If you understand legal mumbo-jumbo, here’s the explanation.

With respect to the transactions listed below in this Section 1(a)(7)(iii), the parties agree that, because the proceeds attributable to these transactions cannot be accurately ascertained, the following procedures shall be used for each NBA Season in which MSG Network is a Related Party of the Knicks (in the case of Section 1(a)(7)(iii)(A) below) and the Madison Square Garden arena is a Related Party of the Knicks (in the case of Section 1(a)(7)(iii)(B) below):

(A) New York Knicks transaction with MSG Network regarding the sale of local media rights: BRI for the Knicks for each NBA Season covered by this Agreement shall include an amount equal to the net proceeds included in BRI attributable to the Los Angeles Lakers’ sale, license or other conveyance of all local media rights (including, but not limited to,broadcast and cable television and radio) for such NBA season.

So I guess everything is fine between the NBA, Lakers and Knicks and everything is legit between the league and the Jackson/Buss relationship.  Now they can live happily ever after….for now.
